August 16 – August 19, 2016
The 2016 Canada 55+ Games, to be held in Brampton, ON from Aug. 16-19, are a great opportunity for Islanders to participate in a National event. Previous PEI participants can attest that the Games are a great mix of competition and social activities. You don’t have to be an elite competitor to compete and have a good time.
The events offered in Brampton are: Golf, Table Tennis, Five pin bowling, Cribbage, Darts, Floor Shuffleboard, Micro Marathon, Curling, Ice Hockey, Slo-Pitch Softball, Swimming, Track & Field, Badminton, Tennis, 8 Ball Pool, Contract Bridge, Duplicate Bridge, Horseshoes, Scrabble, Pickleball, Carpet Bowl, Euchre, & Lawn Bowls.
The Canada Games registration form, or the Canada 55+ Games website, gives information on age categories for each event where it is applicable. The registration fee remains at $125 + tax. There is a team surcharge for slo-pitch and hockey($150),curling ($100) as well as a green fee for golf (3 rounds $150). The $125 registration fee includes transportation to and from all activities directly connected to the Games as well as airport connections. Included in the registration fee are a couple of meals and some entertainment opportunities.
Qualifying: Participants at the PEI 55+ Games in Summerside have the first opportunity to represent PEI at the Brampton Games. For Canada Games events not offered at the Summerside Games, participants at the Montague games have priority. For events not offered at either of the PEI Games, registrations will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
As PEI generally does not fill our quota in many Canada Games events, we are generally able to accommodate all those who are interested even if you have not qualified or were unable to participate in the PEI Games. If this is applicable to you please contact Ernie Stavert and we will likely have a spot for you.
Travel: Travel will be an individual responsibility. We will not be booking a bus. Air fare with WestJet is in the vicinity of $550-$600. The promo code for a 10% WestJet discount is YYZ02 and code KALR1AJ. Participants are responsible for making their own bookings. The opening ceremonies, parade, and BBQ are on Tuesday, Aug 16th with the shuttle buses leaving the hotels at 3:15 pm. The closing ceremonies and banquet are on Friday, Aug 19 with shuttle buses leaving the hotels at 5:30 pm and returning about 10:00 pm. You will need to keep these events in mind when arranging your transportation from PEI.
Accommodations: PEI has been allocated blocks of rooms at the Brampton Comfort Inn(25 with 2 doubles@ $134.99 and 25 queen single $119.99)-hot breakfast, and at the Brampton Days Inn (5 with 2 doubles-$124.99 and 20 with king singles- $114.99)- continental breakfast. All registration forms for all participants must be submitted to Ernie Stavert, or mailed, or delivered to the PEI 55+ Games office at Sport PEI. Do not submit any registrations directly to Brampton.
We are encouraging hockey and curling teams to submit their registrations by the end of May. The deadline for all registrations is June 27th. We will likely have a team meeting at Sport PEI at 7pm on the 27th to finalize late registrations, clothing, etc.
Former Canada Games participants can attest that there is a climate of camaraderie, and fun at every set of Games. In addition, many participants use the Games to do tourist activities.
