It was a beautiful day for a golf tournament today! 100 golfers turned out for the Scramble event and Opening Ceremony on the first day of action at the 2013 Vogue Optical 55+ Summer Games. Lawn bowling and a nature walk also took place today.

The golf- men’s & women’s event will take place on Wednesday, June 19, at Glen Afton Golf Club. All golfers are asked to check in by 12:15. Opening Ceremony & Golf Best Ball Competition

In just 4 days the Vogue Optical 2013 55+ Summer Games will be underway!

The official Opening Ceremony will take place at Countryview Golf Club at 12:15pm. All 55+ participants are invited to attend.

The golf- 4 person best ball event will take place immediately following the Opening Ceremony. All golfers are asked to check in by 12:15. An event briefing will take place at 12:30, with a shotgun start at 1:00. Please click here for the tentative draw for this event. This draw is subject to change. There are a few spots for late entries. Please contact pei55plusgames@gmail.com for more information.

Any changes to the schedule due to weather will be reported to the local media and noted on the website so please check back on the day of the event if you have any concerns.

Crokinole has moved!

Both crokinole events will now take place at the Hunter River Lions Clubs due to a set up issue at the original location. The event will still take place on Tuesday, June 18th, at 9am (singles) and 1pm (doubles).

Seniors Connecting Across Cultures- Open House

The PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada is hosting an open house on Saturday, June 1st from 2-4pm to celebrate the success of their Seniors Connecting Across Cultures program success.

The event will feature demonstrations of line dancing and singing along with other displays created during the past few months of the program. The event will take place at the Murphy’s Community Centre.

Stavert named Curl PEI Senior Female Athlete of the Year

Congratulations to Ruth Stavert, who was named Curl PEI’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year at their AGM and Awards on May 29, 2013. Stavert won gold in the ladies stick curling event at the 2013 55+ Winter Games and then went on to win a national title. Stavert has also been in involved in the planning of many 55+ Games events for many years. Cycling Trail Ride & Nature Walk

This summer, the 55+ Games will feature 2 free events (55+ registration fee still applies). No medals are awarded for these events. If you’re already signed up for another event, why not join in these as well for some extra wellness during the 55+ Games!

A nature walk, led by Jackie Waddell of the Island Nature Trust, will explore Cornwall’s beautiful Hyde Park. It takes place on Monday, June 17 and will last approximately 1 hour. Participants are asked to meet at the Ferry Road Centre at 6:30pm.

A cycling trail ride will follow the Confederation Trail for 20 km, starting at the trail entry near the end of the Warren Grove Road at Route 2. Participants should meet at the starting point at 6:30pm on Wednesday, June 19.

Williams qualifies for World Masters event

Ken Williams, a frequent 55+ Games participant, has qualified for next year’s World Masters Championship swimming event next year in Montreal. Congratulations Ken!

55+ Summer Games Registration Forms are Now Available!

The host committee is busy preparing for the next edition of the Vogue Optical PEI 55+ Summer Games. The Games will be held in Cornwall from June 17-22. Everyone is invited to join in on the fun and maybe try a new event this year!

The registration form will be e-mailed to all past participants for whom we have a valid address and mailed to everyone else next week. If you’ve never participated before or you can’t wait to register, you can print the form off here: 2013 55+ Summer Registration Form.

The deadline to register is June 7th. Remember, the earlier you register, the better prepared we’ll be during the week of the Games.
